The Net Worth Calculator

logo

The Excel Net Worth Calculator template is downloaded as Net Worth.xlt. Be sure to follow the instructions in Chapter 1, “Taking Control of Your Finances,” to load the template and save it as a workbook under its own name (I’ll repeat these instructions below). The calculator, before any data is entered, is shown in Figure 4.1.

The calculator displays the final calculations at the top. There are separate totals for your liabilities and your assets and then the number you are really interested in, your net worth—which of course is just assets minus liabilities. In this template, all values are entered as positive numbers—you do not enter liabilities as negative numbers. Here are the steps to follow:

1.
Assemble the information you will need to fill out the template. This includes bank and investment account statements, credit card statements, your latest mortgage statement, information about personal property, and information about loans.
2.
Use the File, Open command to open Net Worth.xls in Excel.
3.
Select File, Save As and specify a new name and/or location for the file.
4.
Enter data for the items that are relevant to your net worth. Remember, you can enter data only in the cells with a white background, and the blue cells display the results the template calculates. Don’t enter cent values—they are not relevant for these calculations. For most of the items, I have left the Name field unlocked (white background) so you can replace the default names, such as Account 1 and Card 1, with the real names of your assets and liabilities.
5.
As you work, select File, Save now and then to save the new data to your hard disk.
6.
At any time you can save the workbook and quit Excel. When you are ready to continue entering data, start Excel and use the File, Open command to open the workbook.

Once you have entered all your assets and liabilities, you are done. You’ll see your net worth displayed in cell C5. You can print a copy of the workbook if you like by selecting File, Print.
