Men’s Health Urbanathlon 2011 Singapore

Congratulations to all who survived the Men’s Health Urbanathlon 2011! Engineered to be tougher than the race in 2010, this year’s event — with nine challenging obstacles over a 14km course — pushed the close to 2000 participants’ fitness levels to the limit. To raise the stakes, popular obstacles from Urbanathlon 2010 have been upgraded, such as Down And Dirty (the infamous mud pit), Tyred Out (rows of tyres), and Quantum Leap (road barricades), to make them more challenging. Participants also got to tackle new, more backbreaking obstacles introduced this year — The Network (climb a 3-ton truck), Wall Street (scale a cargo container) and Frame Works (navigate a scaffolding structure). We thank all Urbanathletes for their support and participation, and look forward to seeing you again next year! Elderly home care ? a better option than nursing homes

For those who have elderly parents or grandparents, the prospect of elderly health care often comes into mind. As your loved ones age, there comes a point when they are no longer capable of looking after themselves. Of course most family members will offer to pitch in and help whenever possible, however round the clock care is impossible, especially when you have to work and worry about your own kids as well. Usually, the task will fall on one family member who has to sacrifice a lot, and will eventually become overly stressed.

Placing your loved one in a nursing home seems like the only answer, unfortunately, most that are placed in such places are forgotten. The nursing home may be far away from your own area, and going there will end up being an inconvenience. Several elderly people loathe the prospect of spending their time in a nursing home, where they are treated as invalids. Many seniors are disheartened at the idea of leaving their homes, that they have built many memories in over the years, and can even become depressed, which further worsens their health conditions.

Before you think of nursing homes, it is important to realise that not all elderly people need to go to a nursing home. Nursing homes are great for people who have severe dementia and who might harm themselves if left unattended. A large portion of the aging population do not need to go to such extreme measures they might just need some extra help with certain tasks that they can no longer do alone and someone to check up on them and see that they are alright.

Elderly home care is a great alternative to nursing homes. This way, your loved ones get to stay in familiar surroundings and can still go about their normal routines. With elderly home care, nurses and other professionals visit their houses for a certain number of hours per day or week depending on how much care is needed. This way, the elderly can still have a sense of freedom and independence that comes with staying in their own home. This is also a great source of self esteem for the elderly, and they will not become depressed when they realise they cannot do everything that they used to.

Elderly home care is the best option for the well being of elderly people. Nursing homes should only be used as a last resort.

How Does Health Care Reform Affect Senior Citizens?

Quite rightly, a great deal of our senior citizens are going to be worried about what the effects of the new health care reform bill are. It’s true that seniors often use the health care system a lot more often than most young people do, and so they probably have a bigger interest than most. The frightening thing is, for any senior citizen with a fixed income, there is going to be little room for maneuver in their budgets should the cost of health care rise.

So is the new health care reform bill brought about by Barack Obama going to have any direct affects on senior citizens? The answer is “yes”.

However, there are also a lot of complications to this answer, and whether the new affects are good or bad for you will depend much on your individual circumstances.

Let’s take a look at some of the specifics concerning older citizens:

Cuts in Medicare

One of the biggest changes that we’ll see is that under the new bill, the federal governments regular payments to the Medicare Advantage program are set to be cut over the next 10 years by 2 billion. This has been justified by the government who say that people under these plans typically receive more from the government than those who are under regular Medicare receive.

It’s true that there are often additional benefits on offer to seniors in a Medicare Advantage program, which aren’t available to seniors under a traditional Medicare program. It’s likely that there extra benefits will be cut from Medicare Advantage plans once these new cuts are felt.

]]>

This reduction is to be phased in during the next 3 years in most states, beginning in 2011, though there are a few states where this will take more time.

The new healthcare reform bill doesn’t introduce any cuts to the traditional Medicare program however. Despite this pledge though, Medicare contributions towards home healthcare are set to be cut by billion from 2011 until 2019, and there will also be reductions in payments to hospitals over the same period, totaling billion.

Enhancements to Medicare

Medicare’s existing prescription medicine’s benefit is set to be bolstered by the new bill however, as it addresses its “donut hole” problem.

As it stands now, a senior citizen who spends up to 00 on medicines is covered. However, once passed that mark, coverage stops. If that same person manages to spend up to ,154 on medicine, coverage will begin again, hence the nickname “donut hole”.

Starting now in 2010, anyone who falls in this donut hole will be eligible for 0 aid from the government. Afterwards, the bill states that the US government will make annual increases to the amount of medicinal costs it will pay for anyone who falls in this “donut hole”. By the year 2020, the government will pay for 75% of medicine costs for senior citizens who fall into this ,700 to ,154 gap. As well as this, annual Wellness visits by senior citizens are set to be provided for by Medicare.

Medicare Payments Board

The new healthcare reform bill will also see the establishment of an Independent Payment Advisory Board for Medicare, one that is made up of 15 members. It’s principal task is to submit ideas and proposals for legislation in order to cut the per capita spending of Medicare, if this spending starts growing too fast and becomes unsustainable.

The “Too fast” designation will be defined as anything that exceeds the Consumer Price Index’s growth rate during a 5 years period ending in 2013.

If this happens, then the board will meet in 2014 to discuss and submit proposals to be considered by the House of Congress and the US president.

Many critics have claimed that this board will be the tool for future Medicare reductions. Some of the legislative wording in the new bill states that the Independent Payments Advisory Board is prohibited from proposing an idea that would raise taxes, ration care or alter benefits.

Evaluating a student’s written IELTS essay (part 4 of 8)

Here is the IELTS essay question that I submitted to the student: In many countries, the proportion of older people is steadily increasing. Does this trend have more positive or negative effects on society? And here is the student’s entire essay from start to finish (uncorrected): Today, older people make up an increasing proportion of our population. This is very clear in the government statistics, that, the inhabitants aged 50 and over has grown in the last 3 decades. It is believed that aged people has a negative effects on society. This will be proven by analyzing one of the way that retired people spend their money as they are more likely to be providing unpaid care. On these days, we can see that there are a lots gambling shops that are usually busy of aged people. As older people are retired, the pension money that they normally get are spent in betting shops. This example makes clear where retired people are more interested. Thus, there is an obvious link between aged people and a unhappy society. As funded home care services has fallen, the over 50s/60s probably will not get paid care in the next few years. This is very apparent that the government will not have the money to pay for the health care services. It is obvious that the society will be affected. After analyzing the areas of older people hobbies and the lack of the government funding to pay aged people care, it is clear that the only factor that will be affected and will have negative effects is the

Tamiflu ? The most functional influenza treatment drugJohn is one of the good article writers having much experience in writing health articles. He ha

Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate) is one of the most prescribed oral antiviral medications for the treatment and prevention of influenza. Tamiflu works effectively against both the influenza A and B viruses. In addition, Tamiflu can also be used for the treatment of avian flu (bird flu). During the outbreak of swine flu in 2009, the FDA approved the use of Tamiflu for the treatment and prevention of swine flu as well. Tamiflu oseltamivir combats the influenza virus and prevents it from spreading inside your body. Hence, Tamiflu treats influenza at its source and provides you relief from the symptoms of flu. Besides, Tamiflu also shortens the duration of the disease.

How does it work?

Tamiflu oseltamivir isn’t a cure for influenza; however, it does help to reduce the intensity as well as the duration of the symptoms. Oseltamivir – the active ingredient in Tamiflu belongs to a class of medications called antivirals. The influenza virus has a gene that is responsible for making a protein called neuraminidase; this helps the virus escape the cell it has just infected and attack another cell in your body. Tamiflu blocks the action of neuraminidase, thereby inhibiting the spread of the flu virus from one cell to another, as well as preventing the influenza virus from spreading. By preventing the cell to cell spread of the virus, the symptoms and the duration of an influenza infection are significantly reduced. Tamiflu can also be used to prevent the flu following exposure to the virus. To get the best results, you should use the medication within 48-hours after your symptoms occur. In case, you have been exposed to the virus but have not yet received any symptoms you can still take Tamiflu to prevent the flu from occurring.

]]>

What is the need for Tamiflu?

Tamiflu plays a significant role in the influenza prevention and influenza treatment, especially the bird flu and swine flu. This is because there is no cure for either the flu or bird flu. Though, there is a vaccine for the A and B strains of the human flu, there is really no guarantee. The strain of the virus changes every year through mutation and therefore the scientists who develop the vaccine sometimes get the strain wrong for a particular flu season. Tamiflu, which is an antiviral drug, is therefore found extremely helpful as it can fight bacteria and prevent it from spreading.

Side effects of Tamiflu

Like most other prescription drugs, Tamiflu also comes with certain side effects. However, most side effects of Tamiflu are mild to moderate and are not likely to affect everyone who uses this drug. Some of the commonly reported minor side effects of Tamiflu include nausea, diarrhoea, bronchitis, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness and vomiting. By taking Tamiflu with food, you can reduce nausea. Some of the rarely reported major side effects of Tamiflu include chest pain, anaemia and unexplained rash. In very rare cases, sufferers have reported self-injury and delirium due to the use of Tamiflu. Please report to your doctor in case you experience major side effects of Tamiflu or if any of its side effects become bothersome.
